Todd Phillips Directing "Due Date" next, then "The Hangover 2"

Todd Phillips will next direct the road trip comedy Due Date and follow one year later with The Hangover 2, reports Variety.

The commitments come one day after The Hangover crossed the $210 million domestic gross mark and surpassed Wedding Crashers to become the second-biggest grossing R-rated comedy ever.

"Hangover" co-star Zach Galifianakis will play one of the two leads in Due Date, an Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland script that was revised by Adam Sztykiel. In the comedy about fatherhood, an expectant dad and his unlikely travel companion (Galifianakis) race cross-country in hopes of making it home for the birth of his first child.

Both Due Date and The Hangover 2 will follow the same production track as The Hangover. The plan is for the Due Date shoot to begin Oct. 6, and the film will be released next year in the first weekend of June. The "Hangover" sequel will begin production in October 2010 and will be released Memorial Day weekend 2011.

Warner Bros. believes The Hangover will finish around $240 million to become the biggest domestic grossing comedy ever (surpassing Beverly Hills Cop's $234 million) and the third-highest grossing R-rated film ever, behind The Passion of The Christ and The Matrix Reloaded. The Hangover Trailer

The official website for director Todd Phillips' new comedy The Hangover has launched with the trailer for the film, opening in theaters on June 5. The pic stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Heather Graham, Justin Bartha and Jeffrey Tambor.

In the movie, Doug and his three friends drive to Las Vegas two days before his wedding for a blow-out bachelor party they'll never forget. But, in fact, when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning, they can't remember a thing. For some reason, they find a tiger in the bathroom and a six-month-old baby in the closet of their suite at Caesars Palace. The one thing they can't find is Doug. With no clue as to what transpired and little time to spare, the trio must retrace their hazy steps and all their bad decisions in order to figure out where things went wrong and hopefully get Doug back to L.A. in time to walk down the aisle.

I've seen this movie already, and it is vintage Todd Phillips! This is the funniest movie I've seen since Superbad.

The Hangover - Todd Phillips

Last night I attended a screening of "The Hangover" directed by Todd Phillips (who was in attendance). To be completely honest, it's the funniest movie I've seen since Wedding Crashers. The film stars Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Heather Graham, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong, & Ed Helms. "The Hangover" is a Las Vegas-set comedy centered around three groomsmen who lose their about-to-be-wed buddy during their drunken misadventures, then must retrace their steps in order to find him. While the log line sounds formulaic, the screenwriters and Todd Phillips went to every length to keep the audience guessing. I have been a huge fan of Todd Phillips for years (Road Trip & Old School) and thought he may have fallen off with (Starsky & Hutch & School for Scoundrels). However, I am proud to say that he is back in full force and "The Hangover" should be a comedy that we quote for years to come!

Remember where you heard it first.

In Theaters June 5, 2009.
