A chronograph to celebrate Porsche's first overall victory at Le Mans

Porsche Design has now unveiled the limited edition Porsche Le Mans 1970 dashboard watch as a tribute to Porsche’s first overall victory at Le Mans 40 years ago. The new Porsche Design P’6612 Dashboard Le Mans 1970 Limited Edition chronograph celebrates the historical moment when the red-white-red Porsche 917 K bearing start number 23, driven by Porsche works drivers Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood, won the Le Mans. The chronograph truly depicts the values of Porsche Design, expressing function and purity of form. It features light-colored numeric indices against a black background and its dial brings to mind the 917’s dashboard instruments. While the black hour and minute hands are coated with white luminous material, the seconds stop hand is red with a white tip.

The chronograph’s strap, made from black calf leather with red stitching, evokes the steering wheel of the Porsche 917 K. The sapphire crystal, titanium case back shows the limited edition number and the inscription Winner Le Mans 1970, along with “917-023,” the chassis number of the winning car. The P’6612 Dashboard Le Mans 1970 Limited Edition chronograph boasts the self-winding ETA 2894-A2 movement, which offers a power reserve of 42 hours.

No word on pricing, but only 917 pieces will be released to retail outlets in September 2010. via Bornrich

Devon Works Tread 1 breaks new horizon in horology

Since timepieces have moved on from traditional looks to become a big part of the fashion world, but most importantly the watches are now designed to push the boundaries of mechanical craftsmanship so as to break new horizons. This is exactly what Devon Works has achieved with their new engineering masterpiece - Tread 1. This space-aged and bulletproof haute horology encloses four 2/1000th of an inch thin belts mounted on a central chassis to allow smooth operation and at the same time to create an illusion as if parts are floating within the case. Powered by four extremely compact microstep motors what could be described as battery, Tread 1 has a integrated wireless technology for battery charging that will run for up to two weeks on a single charge. Made from high grade stainless steel, the Tread 1 will sell for around $15,000. Words by Pankaj for Bornrich.

Breitling Montbrillant Datora Watch

Drawing inspiration from a grand era in its history, Breitling has chosen to revive the Datora spirit, in tribute to a bestseller of the 1940’s in various color options. Today as in yesteryear, the distinguishing token of this chronograph lies in its unique way of showing the date. Embodying an authentic demonstration of mechanic ingenuity , its calendar displays both the day and month through side-by-side apertures, while a half-moon center pointer indicates the time. In addition to the indispensable slide rule, tachometer or 1/100th of an hour indication, a second display shows 24 hour or military time. The timezones of the world’s major cities are engraved on the caseback as well. Via Hypebeast

SNYPER WATCHES LAUNCHES THE SNYPER ONE

The Snyper One is the first watch to come out from the new brand and it will be released in June 2009. Today we can give you an early preview of this exciting time keeper, which pushes both the limits of watch design and technical innovation, with this only being the start of it all.

The 44mm steel case is studded and coated in matte black PVD. The bezel is fixed; two steel fixation bars are assembled at 8 and 10 o’clock allowing additional modules to be added to the case. The sapphire glass back is engraved with a target. The time-adjustment crown has the appearance of a sight instrument, while the chronograph function controls remind of two triggers. The watch sports a 7755 S caliber, an evolution of one of the most recognized Swiss watch movements to ever be produced. The movement also features blue screw details and of course the red Snyper signature. The rubber bracelet underlines the overall sporty and military inspired look of the watch.

Louis Vuitton’s new $265,000 Tambour Mystérieuse timepiece

Though they often keep it on the low, many luxury watchmakers don't produce their own movements, which are costly, labor-intensive, and complex to make. So when a brand brings its manufacture in-house, as Louis Vuitton has now done, it's serious business—and, as in the case of the new Tambour Mystérieuse, worthy of celebration. Vuitton's first foray into full manufacturing—conception to construction—features a dazzling movement that seems to float inside the bezel, an effect accomplished by mounting it on sapphire crystal disks. If that feat of levitation isn't flashy enough, the Mystérieuse—available as a manual or automatic—is also fully customizable down to the metal and stones on the case. All that (and the miniature LV trunk it comes in) goes a long way toward explaining the $265,000 price tag. Since each takes about a year to craft, by the time yours is ready, you may even be able to afford it.via men.style.com

Special edition watches for The Ferrari Scuderia Collection

To commemorate the launch of the Ferrari California, Officine Panerai rolled out a special edition Ferrari two-counter chronograph in December of last year, and now two new models have been added to the Ferrari Scuderia collection - the Ferrari Chronograph Red Dial and the Ferrari Chronograph Yellow Dial. Both the chronographs clearly reflect the connection with Ferrari cars and the creative approach towards watch-making. Touting a polished steel case with brushed steel edges, the watches come with two screw-down chronograph push pieces and a crown with rims, which remind one of the dashboard controls of Ferrari models. The tachometer scale for calculating average speeds also shows a link with the cars. The Prancing Horse symbol is there on the back of the case, the winding crown and the dial of the two watches. Black calfskin leather has been used for the straps, while the inner layer has been done with red alligator skin. via Born Rich
